What is your favorite roofing memory?

What is your favorite roofing memory? Three NRCA members share their answers.

My favorite roofing memory is the day I repaired a roof leak for a domestic violence shelter for our local YWCA. Although the circumstances placing someone in one of these shelters is dire, it was an honor to be able to help keep the women and children staying there safe and dry. Seeing a mom, no different than myself, talking to her child in the shelter, made me realize that anyone can be in that situation, and it’s so wonderful we have places and people who help those in need. It's a reminder that we do more than just install and repair roofs for a living—we are making a difference in people’s lives!

More than twenty-seven years in the industry creates a few memories along the way, so picking a favorite is a bit more difficult than I expected. My favorite roofing memories have to be the smiles and gratitude from our customers when we help them in a bad situation. Whether it’s fixing a leak over someone’s desk after a thunderstorm or providing disaster relief after a Derecho devastated our community in 2020, being able to provide one of life’s most basic needs—dry space—tops my list.

One of my favorite memories in roofing takes me back to a snowy Super Bowl weekend in the Northeast U.S. region from Pennsylvania to Maine. The region was buried under a massive amount of snow, and we were called in to help keep businesses open by clearing rooftops. It was an all-hands-on-deck effort, working alongside multiple local and regional roofing contractors who were directing more than 2,000 people for several days. The stakes were high, and the stress was undeniable, but so were the moments of camaraderie and teamwork. Everyone pulled together to tackle an enormous challenge, and it was incredibly rewarding to know we were making a real difference—not just for our clients but for the countless people who relied on their services. That weekend was a perfect reminder of why I love this industry—the problem-solving, collaboration and opportunity to help others when it matters most.
