What habits keep bad bosses from becoming good leaders?

Behavior from toxic bosses can affect numerous aspects of a company, including negatively affecting worker performance.

Inc. shares the following habits of bad bosses.

  • A “my way or the highway” mentality. Toxic bosses demand things always go their way, and if something does not go their way, they often cause more problems. For example, toxic bosses may bully employees into changing their minds or try to turn team members against one another.
  • It is all about the bottom line. Toxic bosses do not check in with team members or demonstrate empathy for employees’ challenges. They only are concerned with having bottom-line conversations that affect or benefit them.
  • They do not show respect. In a 2020 study by ResumeLab about what makes someone a terrible manager, 72% of surveyed employees said they were treated in a rude or disrespectful manner by a bad boss. Nearly 70% were criticized in front of their colleagues, and 83% of them felt bad about it. Additionally, 42% of toxic bosses blamed others for their failures.
  • They want complete control. Toxic bosses want their hands on every aspect of employees’ work rather than trusting team members to perform their tasks. This micromanagement results in employees reporting a lack of expressing creativity or the free flow of ideas; open, transparent group discussion; and team motivation.
