What are the traits of a good boss?

As workplaces adapt to new technology and perspectives, the expectations placed on leaders also are evolving.

Fast Company shares the following three traits you need to excel as a boss.

  1. Clear communication. Employees want straightforward, transparent messaging from their bosses that builds trust and helps explain the team’s vision, direction and priorities, as well as the “why” behind decisions. To excel, employees need to know what it means to do the job well. Clear communication also is crucial regarding feedback, which should be shared early, often and constructively to foster an environment where employees are supported to continuously learn, improve and develop.
  2. Compassionate, human-centered focus. According to the recent Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2023 Report, 59% of employees worldwide are disengaged and quiet quitting by showing minimal productivity and effort. Additionally, 44% report having experienced significant stress daily, and 51% are actively seeking new job opportunities. In response to this trend, good bosses must demonstrate genuine care for employees’ well-being. Check in regularly with your employees; empathize with their challenges and support them to overcome those obstacles; and ask meaningful questions and show a sincere interest in their responses. Compassionate leadership requires you to embrace your own humanity and genuinely connect with those around you so employees feel valued and appreciated.
  3. Realistic expectations. It is important employees have realistic, clear expectations from a leader. Establish a clear framework for what is expected and ensure employees have a comprehensive understanding of their roles and standards of behavior. Be sure workloads are realistic to prevent burnout and foster a healthy work-life balance. You also should try to accommodate different working styles and personal circumstances, offering flexibility that allows employees to give their best efforts.
