Three steps you should take with every new hire

The first 90 days after hiring a new employee are crucial to the new hire’s success, so it is important you have an effective onboarding process.

Inc. shares the following three steps you should take with all new hires.

  1. Have a good system set up before hiring. You typically are looking for someone to fill an existing position, so much of the work should be done if your company has set up proper processes and procedures; whatever is needed for that position should be well-documented ahead of time. If you do not have this in place, when an employee puts in two weeks’ notice, be sure to ask him or her to make a running list of tasks to help the next person.
  2. Record your onboarding sessions. When you have hired someone and are planning onboarding sessions, record each session you have together. It can help you build a more robust systems and processes file and will allow the new hire to reference it later if needed.
  3. Document the process along the way. Providing a new hire with documents or videos created by the person previously in the position is good, but at some point, the new hire will have questions and find inconsistencies. Be sure the new hire updates the documents to reflect those changes.
