Three crucial but underrated leadership habits

Although leadership habits such as humility, authenticity and charisma often are highly valued, there are underrated habits that can contribute significantly to a leader’s success.

Fast Company shares the following crucial leadership habits that receive less attention.

  1. The ability to build a high-performing team. If you cannot turn a group of people into a high-performing team, you are not functioning as a leader. Leadership styles vary based on the team, culture and challenge, so leaders do not need to follow the same methods to reach the goal of having a high-performing team. Systematic evidence suggests the best leaders can flex between different styles, choosing task-relevant habits and behaviors from a range of approaches.
  2. A strong degree of ambition. Ambition often is associated with its dark side, bringing to mind power-hungry individuals who put their own interests ahead of others. However, ambition also is the fuel that drives progress and propels leaders to improve the world. The best leaders not only are ambitious but also can activate human ambition in others, aligning them with big goals and vision.
  3. Admirable levels of self-control. Leaders who can control themselves and keep their inner demons and external temptations in check demonstrate the essence of integrity and ethics. Good leadership happens when those in charge take charge of themselves. If you cannot manage yourself, you should not manage others.
