This Week in D.C.

Thank you for supporting ROOFPAC at NRCA’s Midyear Committee Meetings in Chicago!

Thank you to our friends and colleagues for supporting ROOFPAC at our Cocktails on the (Gold) Coast reception during NRCA’s Midyear Committee Meetings in Chicago at the famous LUXBAR. Everyone had a great time as more than 130 attendees enjoyed filet mignon sliders and the always-popular old fashioned. Members of NRCA’s Political Insiders Council and Capitol Hill Club attended complimentary as a benefit of their membership. We also would like to thank sponsor Johns Manville for making this event possible.

Revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, must be used starting in November

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced it soon will publish a revised version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, which employers must complete to verify the work authorization status of all new hires. The agency indicates the revised Form I-9 is significantly streamlined and contains improvements that should make it easier to complete.

The new Form I-9 is being issued as the Department of Homeland Security terminated temporary COVID-19 flexibilities related to Form I-9 July 31 and provides DHS the authority to authorize optional alternatives for employers to examine Form I-9 documentation. Additionally, DHS has published an accompanying document authorizing employers enrolled in E-Verify the option to remotely examine their new employees’ identity and employment authorization documents as an alternative to conducting the examination in person. Employers may use the previous Form I-9 through Oct. 31, but beginning Nov. 1, all employers will be required to use the new Form I-9.

Rep. Beth Van Duyne visits IB Roof Systems to discuss tax reform and CTE

Because of a great discussion during Roofing Day in D.C. in April, Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) visited IB Roof Systems in Grapevine, Texas, to discuss small-business tax reform, funding for career and technical education, and immigration reform to address the industry’s workforce challenges. Attending Roofing Day in D.C., the largest roofing industry advocacy event of the year, allows industry professionals to develop long-lasting relationships with members of Congress. We are truly making a difference!

If you would like to host your representative for a tour or meeting, reach out to NRCA Director of Federal Affairs Deb Mazol at DMazol@nrca.net.

The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act turns five

The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act was signed into law five years ago this week, amending the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act and creating what is known as “Perkins V.” This reform law was enacted after roofing industry professionals advocated for passage during the inaugural Roofing Day in D.C. in March 2018. Funding for Perkins State Grants is a top priority for the industry, and we continue to follow the annual appropriations process, which currently has level funding in House legislation and a $40 million increase compared with fiscal year 2023 in Senate legislation. Want to help? Use our grassroots action alert system to urge your representative to provide robust funding for this vital program. Learn more about the funding your state receives
