On Oct. 14, the Rising Stars Program, a nonprofit that aims to close the skilled labor gap by connecting young adults with career pathways in construction, hosted a hands-on building competition for Cleveland Heights High School students with partners Nudura and HGTV’s Dave Marrs at Tremco’s new Façade Fire Lab in Cleveland.
The event was designed to generate students’ interest in construction and homebuilding careers and encourage collaboration and problem-solving. Dave Marrs, co-host of HGTV’s "Fixer to Fabulous," shared his personal career journey and spoke about skills needed to succeed in the building industry. Additionally, a group of 15 Rising Stars students worked together in small teams to tackle a construction challenge that encouraged them to think like future builders.
The Rising Stars Program operates in six cities across the U.S. to prepare high school students for careers in the construction and green building sectors. The program combines classroom lessons with industry mentorship and hands-on experiences to equip young people with tangible skills and exposure to career pathways.
Connecting directly with potential workers is important. Visit NRCA’s Recruitment Toolkit page for information to help you communicate with different audiences and share why a roofing career is rewarding and lucrative.
