Everyone has tough days at work, but it is important leaders are aware of team morale and recognize when team members are experiencing burnout.
Fast Company shares the following red flags leaders should look for that indicate the entire team is burned out.
- Widespread apathy. During meetings, if your team shows no energy or excitement and does not engage, there could be a problem. One of the most common symptoms of burnout is the absence of any pleasure.
- Inattention to detail. You can detect a lack of engagement when you look for follow-through on projects. When team members are burned out, they often will go through the motions but skip key details or not complete their work. You should be particularly concerned when some of your most conscientious employees start bungling projects.
- Gasoline on every fire. A crucial part of resilience at work is recognizing when a situation is escalating and finding ways to disengage and de-escalate to keep a small issue from becoming a big one. If a situation worsens, people often feed on it, causing increased anxiety or anger. When a team that typically collaborates well and works effectively shifts to consistently feeding on negative energy and creating feedback loops that spiral out of control, it is a sign there is a collective lack of resilience, and the team’s burnout must be addressed.
