Industry alliance and Microsoft partner regarding AI training for construction

North America’s Building Trades Unions and Microsoft have partnered to deliver free artificial intelligence training to U.S. construction workers, according to Construction Dive.

The partnership focuses on AI literacy, data security and practical applications and will help instructors more efficiently create lesson plans, quizzes and training materials, as well as introduce job-site use cases. It aims to reach tens of thousands of workers through NABTU’s network of training centers, gathering input from contractors to ensure the curriculum reflects real-world job-site needs.

Training begins with data security and basic AI literacy then moves on to practical applications for instructors and workers. In part, the program is meant to help reduce preparation time for instructors so they have more time for hands-on mentoring. Additionally, the potential for AI tools on the job site will be introduced; for example, using AI to quickly identify updates or changes in standards rather than referencing a lengthy manual.

“NABTU’s training model has always been about scale, quality and lifelong opportunity," said NABTU President Sean McGarvey when speaking at NABTU's annual Legislative Conference. "Through this expanded collaboration with Microsoft, we are making AI training available to instructors, apprentices and journey-level workers across our system. This work helps keep the building trades at the forefront of innovation while advancing our mission to deliver family-sustaining careers and help shape how new technology expands opportunity for every worker.”
