The best leaders know there is always more to learn about themselves and others as they strive to be aware and adapt in their position. But some leaders may believe they have nothing more to learn about being a leader and, therefore, are not successful.
Fast Company offers the following signs your leadership may be failing.
- You strive for popularity rather than effectiveness. When you play favorites, make the easy decision and avoid important conversations, you let down yourself and your team. Leaders must take a stand regarding things that matter and behave consistently even if they are met with criticism.
- You ignore bad behavior. A study by researchers from the University of Central Florida’s College of Business found when a person is considered a top performer, he or she is much more likely to have bad behavior overlooked by a manager. You must always be aware of team dynamics and recognize when your employees exhibit poor behavior.
- You are drunk on power. Be aware of how your leadership position affects the way you think and behave. Do you think your needs and rights outweigh those of others? Do you fail to acknowledge your team’s effort and instead focus on self-promotion to ensure you look good?
- You believe you are the smartest person in the room. Great companies can suffer under arrogant leaders, who view the world in black and white and believe they are morally superior. Such leaders are not open to feedback and are unwilling to compromise. Effective leaders know they do not have all the answers.
- You are the last to hear bad news. You should worry if you only hear good news—this means people do not trust how you will react to bad news. It is important to welcome all types of news and seek out differences of opinion to help you adapt to situations successfully.
