How can you identify burnout and overcome it?

Although burnout is common in the workplace, it does not always look the same for everyone.

Harvard Business Review offers the following tips to help identify the type of burnout you may be facing and what you can do about it.

  • Overload burnout. This happens when you overlook your own needs or personal life to fulfill work demands. Instead, you can choose to adjust your priorities and restore a better work/life balance.
  • Underchallenged burnout. You may believe your job does not offer opportunities to grow. Identify achievable development goals so you have something meaningful to strive toward, even it is not directly related to your career.
  • Neglect burnout. You may stop trying when work situations do not go as planned; give up in response to setbacks; or feel disheartened when you face your daily to-do list. Identify exactly what you are dreading and create a list of responsibilities to discuss with your boss that you want to say “no” to or delegate. It also is important to prioritize self-care outside of work.
