A labor shortage continues to affect the construction industry, so finding qualified labor is crucial. Employers face challenges such as high turnover rates; job seekers’ increased expectations; and pressure to meet project deadlines with fewer workers.
For Construction Pros shares the following insights from organizational development veteran Larry Kokkelenberg to help companies attract the right job candidates and combat labor challenges.
- Identify characteristics for success. Kokkelenberg said effective hiring starts with identifying traits and habits of successful employees to guide the interview process and help you choose ideal candidates. This can help you attract candidates with appropriate technical skills, safety competencies and a teamwork mindset.
- Be proactive with outreach. Kokkelenberg emphasized using initiatives such as summer internships; partnerships with community colleges; soliciting the Department of Labor; working with the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program for transitioning service members; and taking advantage of digital platforms, local job fairs and community partnerships.
- Invest in training. Labor challenges make it difficult to “get the exact experience you want,” according to Kokkelenberg. He said once a company hires the right person, investing in training is critical to enhance skills and retain employees. “Training should show employees they are part of the company’s future,” Kokkelenberg said. “It’s not just about compliance; it’s about demonstrating their worth.” He said salaries, work-life balance, job security and leadership opportunities also are vital to keeping employees engaged.
- Do not stop recruiting. Kokkelenberg said companies should maintain an ongoing recruitment strategy even when positions are filled to prepare for unexpected turnover. You should always be looking for good people.
