How can you effectively delegate tasks?

Leaders typically have a long list of to-dos to tackle. If you are feeling overwhelmed, you likely should be delegating tasks so you can free up time and energy to focus on work only you can do.

Inc. offers the following tips for efficiently delegating tasks in the workplace.

  • Give yourself space to think. Physically schedule time in your calendar to review projects and consider what you can delegate.
  • Identify the best person for the job. It is important you thoughtfully choose who would be the best individual to take on certain tasks. Consider who has the right skill set; is physically available; can complete the work in a timely manner; and has the authority to make key decisions.
  • Delegate multiple tasks at a time. When you identify tasks and assign them to others all at once, it will keep employees occupied and give you plenty of time to do your own work. It also may help you get a better sense of what needs to be prioritized in your business.
  • Make note of delegated tasks. You still need to keep tabs on the tasks you delegate so you can stay informed and make timely decisions. Be sure to note the delegated task, date, due date and task owner.
  • Follow up in a timely manner. It is important you are aware of a project’s progress. Depending on how complicated the project is, you may want to schedule brief check-in meetings and in-depth review meetings with individuals to whom you delegated.
