How can you build a stronger work ethic?

Work ethic involves principles such as reliability, productivity, autonomy and the ability to collaborate. Although work ethic may come naturally to some people, it can also be learned and sharpened.

Harvard Business Review offers the following ways to strengthen your work ethic.

  • Develop self-discipline. It is important to better understand your impulses so you can manage them. Create systems to hold yourself accountable and set yourself up to have the energy needed to do good work.
  • Reset your priorities daily. Take a few minutes in the morning to identify the tasks you need to complete. Find a balance between urgent, immediate tasks and tasks that are contributing to longer-term projects.
  • Own your work. Take pride in your to-do list. If something does not make sense, ask questions for clarification. If you have an idea you think is great, pitch it.
  • Be a team player. Collaboration increases the effects of your work, serves your team and demonstrates your dependability.
