As the construction industry struggles with a labor shortage, it is important to recruit and retain members of Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012). However, for those who are not familiar with the Gen Z mindset and workplace expectations, it can be difficult to manage Gen Z employees.
Inc. offers the following five tips to help you better manage your Gen Z employees.
- Communicate clearly and frequently. Gen Z wants to know what is expected of them and how they are performing. It is important to provide clear, concise feedback that is positive and constructive and regularly check in with your employees to ensure they have what they need.
- Embrace technology. Gen Z employees grew up with technology as a key part of their lives. They are comfortable using digital tools and platforms to communicate and collaborate and expect their employers to do the same.
- Offer more flexibility. Work-life balance and flexible schedules are crucial for Gen Z employees.
- Provide opportunities for growth. Gen Z employees want to grow personally and professionally, so it is important they have opportunities for advancement and development and believe their contributions are valued. For example, you can offer mentorship, training programs or a chance to take on new responsibilities.
- Foster a positive, inclusive culture. Gen Z employees want to work for companies that are committed to creating a positive, inclusive culture. It is important to create an environment where everyone believes they are valued, respected and supported.
