How can you ask for help with your business?

Every business owner needs help at some point, but many people feel vulnerable when asking for help. It is important to recognize your own limitations and realize you need guidance, according to uschamber.com.

Following are ways to approach getting the advice, financial support or mentorship you need.

  • Make it clear you need help. A phenomenon known as “inattentional blindness” can cause selective hearing that leads to people not realizing when they are being asked to help someone. You should be completely clear that you are asking for assistance.
  • Be specific. People sometimes can be vague and indirect when asking for help because they do not want to seem pushy or demanding. Ensure you make a straightforward, specific request. Unclear requests can make it difficult for people to gauge what you really need and make them reluctant to try to help you.
  • Adjust your request appropriately. When you approach someone for help, be realistic about what the individual can offer. Accommodate the other person’s schedule and make sure you have everything necessary to complete the request. Do not ask for more guidance than a person can feasibly give you.
  • Communicate how the help will be effective. When people understand their help will make you more effective, they will be more motivated to agree to your request. Highlight the future effects of the aid they will provide; a tangible outcome will make your request seem more meaningful.
