From SkillsUSA competitor to roofing company president

Jackson Dodd, president of NRCA member New South Roofing Inc., Bainbridge, Ga., and a SkillsUSA alumnus, recently answered the following questions regarding his SkillsUSA experience and how it influenced his career path.

How did you get involved with the SkillsUSA program?

I got involved through the SkillsUSA program at the high school I attended.

Why did you decide to participate in SkillsUSA competitions?

I loved the competitive concept of being able to showcase my skills. I competed at local, state and national levels in the framing category about 15 years ago.

What was your path from SkillsUSA to owning a roofing company?

After competing in SkillsUSA and graduating from high school, I went to work for a commercial roofing company and traveled around installing roof systems on retail, health care and government projects. I eventually worked my way to the top. In 2016, I co-founded New South Roofing Inc. with a focus on residential and commercial steep-slope roof systems. In 2022, I became president after purchasing my partner’s shares.

How did SkillsUSA influence your career path?

SkillsUSA opened my eyes to career opportunities in the construction industry.

You currently serve on the advisory board for your local school district’s career, technical and agricultural education program and have set up a scholarship for a senior high school student pursuing a career in the trades. What did you learn from your SkillsUSA experience that inspired you to get involved with CTE efforts during your career?

My personal experience and being in the industry inspired me. I want to make the opportunity available to other students by exposing them to a career path with unlimited possibilities for growth and advancement.

What would you tell a young person who is considering joining the industry?

Get paid while you learn without incurring student debt. The opportunities for advancement are endless. Find an area that interests you, master your craft and join a company that will push you to succeed. And don’t stop learning—get industry training and be certified in everything you can.
