Employee satisfaction varies by age and career stage

Bamboo HR reports employee satisfaction may be recovering after falling for several years, according to For Construction Pros. However, satisfaction varies depending on factors such as age and tenure.

Bamboo HR’s employee Net Promoter Score measures how likely employees are to recommend their company as a place to work; above 20 is favorable, and above 50 is excellent. The score rose 4.4% to 40 in the first half of 2026—the strongest first half since 2023—compared with the same period in 2025.

The data show companies with higher employee satisfaction had 46% less turnover than companies with the lowest satisfaction scores. Additionally, companies with 150 or fewer employees and negative employee Net Promoter Scores had annual turnover rates 18 to 19 percentage points higher than companies with the happiest employees.

Workers ages 26 to 30 reported some of the lowest scores, with an employee Net Promoter Score nine points below the overall average in the first half of 2026. Workers ages 51 to 60 reported scores eight points above average. Workers older than 50 had some of the strongest gains in satisfaction, while employees under 30 experienced only slight improvement.

New hires reported an average employee Net Promoter Score of 51, and long-term employees averaged 57. Employees who had been at a company for two to three years reported the lowest score at 33.

Retention is a crucial part of the construction workforce, and the data from BambooHR indicates companies that focus on employee satisfaction could have an advantage regarding retaining their workforce. It could help employers to talk to employees at different stages of their careers and consider their daily experiences.
