Eat wisely to gain the energy for physical work

NATE: The Communications Infrastructure Contractors Association reports individuals who are in physically demanding jobs can burn up to 300 calories per hour, according to Safety+Health magazine. Therefore, it is important for such workers to eat food that is not only healthy but gives them the necessary energy to do the job.

The association says workers in a physically demanding job should focus on three primary macronutrients to provide balance to the body: protein, such as lean meats, eggs and beans; carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and oats; and healthy fats, such as nuts, seeds, fatty fish and avocados.

NATE shares the following tips to help workers eat healthily on the job:

  • Meal prep. Cook meals each week and portion them into containers for each day of the week. Make high-protein meals that include chicken or turkey.
  • Start the day right. For a quality breakfast, try oatmeal with nuts and fruit, a whole grain breakfast sandwich or hard-boiled eggs.
  • Be smart with snacks. Consider bringing a protein shake, an apple with peanut butter, or hummus and vegetables.
