Dodge Data & Analytics, New York, has reported construction rose 12.8% in March after falling 13.2% in February.
Nonresidential building construction rose 6.3% in March as manufacturing starts surged 251.9%. Commercial starts decreased 9.2%, and institutional starts fell 1.5%.
Residential building construction rose 2.3% in March. Single-family housing decreased 5.3%, and multifamily starts grew 15.3%.
Nonbuilding construction jumped 37.9% in March.
For the 12 months ending March, total construction starts were up 5.4% compared with the 12 months ending March 2025. Nonbuilding construction rose 15.8%; nonresidential building climbed 6.5%; and residential building fell 5.3%.
“A few strong categories overcame slight weakness in all the others in March,” said Eric Gaus, chief economist for Dodge Construction Network. “The commercial segment shows the most strength with 12-month growth for all subcategories except warehousing.”
