Construction jobs were added in 31 states in August amid labor shortages

Thirty-one states added construction jobs in August even as many companies report they are struggling to hire workers, according to www.agc.org.

Arizona added the most construction jobs from July to August—5,300—and had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—2.9%. Minnesota lost the largest number of construction jobs (-1,900) for the month and Wyoming had the largest percentage decline (-3.2%).

The Associated General Contractors of America’s 2022 Workforce Survey, which was conducted with Autodesk and completed in August, found 93% of respondents had openings for hourly craft workers. The most common reason for difficulty filling positions—cited by 77% of firms—was available candidates were not qualified to work in the industry. Two-thirds of firms reported projects had been delayed because of shortages of employees or subcontractors.

“Despite an overall rise in construction employment, too many openings remained unfilled due to a lack of qualified workers,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “As a result, many projects are being delayed or even canceled.”
