Construction jobs were added in 31 states from July to August

Thirty-one states added construction jobs in August, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-five states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.

“A solid majority of states added construction jobs in August on both a monthly and year-over-year basis,” said AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson. “But several threats to continued employment gains loom, including fast-spreading opposition to data centers, a delay in renewing federal highway funding, and constant turmoil in tariff policy.”

Ohio added the most construction jobs from July to August—4,600—and Mississippi had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—2.6%. From August 2025 to August, Ohio added the most construction jobs—17,800—and Louisiana had the largest percentage increase—12.7%.

Colorado lost the largest number of construction jobs (-2,200) for the month and Rhode Island had the largest percentage decline (-1.3%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-6,900) and New Hampshire had the largest percentage decline (-3.7%).
