Construction jobs were added in 31 states from August to September

Thirty-one states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs in September, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Twenty-seven states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.

“Seeing more states add construction jobs in September is an encouraging sign, but labor shortages remain a significant hurdle for many contractors,” said Macrina Wilkins, AGC’s senior research analyst at the association. “Firms continue to report that finding enough qualified workers is one of their biggest challenges and a key factor behind project delays.”

Texas added the most construction jobs from August to September—4,300—and Michigan had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—2.1%. From September 2024 to September, Texas added the most construction jobs—16,400—and New Mexico had the largest percentage increase—12.4%.

Florida lost the largest number of construction jobs (-4,400) for the month and Mississippi had the largest percentage decline (-1%). During the past 12 months, New York lost the most construction jobs (-16,900) and New Jersey had the largest percentage decline (-6%).
