Thirty states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs in March, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-one states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.
“Construction job gains have continued in a majority of states, but the increases are less widespread and robust than in 2024,” said AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson. “As workers retire, leave the industry or leave the country, it becomes more urgent to allow contractors to be able to recruit from abroad as well as domestically.”
Texas added the most construction jobs from February to March—8,500—and Kentucky had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—3.6%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—28,700—and New Mexico had the largest percentage increase—12%.
California lost the largest number of construction jobs (-3,700) for the month and Mississippi had the largest percentage decline (-3.4%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-23,400) and Washington had the largest percentage decline (-5.3%).
