Twenty-nine states added construction jobs in April as contractors continued to face worker shortages, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-nine states added construction jobs during the past year.
“Demand for construction workers remains positive in a majority of states but there are risks to further gains,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “Steeper tariffs and tighter restrictions on sourcing materials may lead to project cancellations and delays, imperiling job increases.”
Michigan added the most construction jobs from March to April—4,200—and had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—2.1%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—30,500—and Alaska had the largest percentage increase—18%.
Ohio lost the largest number of construction jobs (-7,600) for the month and Iowa had the largest percentage decline (-3.2%). During the past 12 months, New York lost the most construction jobs (-7,100) and Maryland had the largest percentage decline (-4%).
