Twenty-seven states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs in May, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-three states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.
“Construction has been in a holding pattern for several months, with gains in a small majority of states,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “Uncertainty over tariffs, immigration, federal funding, taxes and other policy shifts is causing many types of projects to be put on hold across the country.”
Michigan added the most construction jobs from April to May—4,300—and Montana had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—3.9%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—28,600—and New Mexico had the largest percentage increase—17.2%.
California and Virginia lost the largest number of construction jobs (-1,900) for the month and Vermont had the largest percentage decline (-1.9%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-13,800) and Washington had the largest percentage decline (-5%).
