Twenty-six states added construction jobs in December 2024, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-eight states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.
“Many firms are counting on strong public-sector demand this year and plan to hire as a result,” said AGC CEO Jeffrey Shoaf. “But possible federal funding pauses and efforts to curtail lawful work authorizations could impact future hiring plans for many firms.”
Washington added the most construction jobs from November 2024 to December 2024—4,000—and South Dakota had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—1.9%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—31,500—and Alaska had the largest percentage increase—18.9%.
New York lost the largest number of construction jobs (-4,400) for the month and Mississippi had the largest percentage decline (-2.2%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-12,400) and West Virginia had the largest percentage decline (-3.4%).
