Twenty-four states added construction jobs in February as demand for construction projects remains strong, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Forty-five states added construction jobs during the past year.
“Unfavorable weather may have held back construction in many states last month compared to January,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “But construction employment continued to expand almost everywhere in February compared to a year ago, despite a slump in homebuilding.”
California added the most construction jobs from January to February—7,600—and Minnesota and Rhode Island had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—1.7%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—37,900—and Rhode Island had the largest percentage increase—12.4%
Tennessee lost the largest number of construction jobs (-1,700) for the month, and Hawaii had the largest percentage decline (-2%). During the past 12 months, West Virginia lost the most construction jobs (-2,200) and had the largest percentage decline (-3.2%), along with South Dakota and Washington, D.C.
