Forty-three states added construction jobs from April 2018 to April 2019, and 32 states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from March to April, according to www.agc.org.
"Construction employment rose in most states over the past year, yet the record number of job openings at the end of March implies contractors would add even more workers if they could," says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. "The count of states with rising construction employment in the latest month would be still higher if more workers were available."
Texas added the most construction jobs—32,500—between April 2018 and April 2019. Florida, Arizona and California also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, West Virginia added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, Wyoming and Minnesota.
Thirty-two states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from March to April, with Illinois adding the most construction jobs—7,500—followed by Texas, Missouri and Arizona. Iowa added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month.
Seven states and Washington, D.C., lost construction jobs between April 2018 and April 2019. Louisiana lost the highest number of construction jobs—8,400—followed by South Carolina and Mississippi. Construction employment fell in 15 states from March to April, and Wisconsin lost more than any other state—2,400.
