Be sure your company is prepared when disaster strikes

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports 2020 was a record-breaking year for natural disasters, according to www.forconstructionpros.com. The U.S. experienced 22 separate billion-dollar weather and climate events—the most ever—which cost the U.S. $95 billion in damages.

With most construction work taking place outdoors, natural disasters can cause destruction and project delays for construction companies. It is crucial your company is prepared when disaster strikes; following are steps to consider:

  • Develop a response plan for natural disasters common in your area. Be sure to include a site-specific evacuation strategy for employees. Ready.gov offers resources for planning.
  • Review your insurance and update it as needed. Are you protected against the types of disasters that may occur in your location? Is the amount of coverage enough to protect your business?
  • Establish a safe location where you can store equipment and supplies in an emergency, as well as protect important paperwork and electronic data.
  • Implement an emergency communications strategy for employees and clients.
  • Have useful supplies handy. For example, if you work in a hurricane-prone area, gather items such as ground anchors, duct tape, rope and sandbags.
  • Take advanced warnings seriously and do not wait until the last minute to start preparing or take action.

Be sure you are ready to handle the aftermath, as well. After danger has passed and authorities give the all-clear, assess damage and keep employees and clients informed.

Take photos, document what has been damaged or destroyed and get in touch with your insurer as soon as possible. Also, be sure you know your options for financial assistance; the Small Business Administration is a good place to start.
