Description

During a train-the-trainer workshop, you will complete a 10-hour accreditation program about how to teach torch safety. Through classroom instruction and hands-on torching activities, you learn the latest industry best safety practices for torch-applied roof systems. You also learn the teaching skills needed to train others about torch safety. After successfully completing this program, you will be authorized to conduct CERTA certification training for roofing workers. Authorized trainers receive training materials, including an instructors guide and English and Spanish editions of the CERTA student manual and training video.

This course will benefit roofing professionals at all levels who need to implement and expand their torch safety programs.

Amy Staska
NRCA's vice president, NRCA University

Amy has been with NRCA since August of 2011 and previously worked for the association from 1996 to 2004. Amy has worked in training and education her entire career, including at Awana Clubs International—a nondenominational children's and youth Christian ministry—and the University of New Hampshire.

At NRCA, Amy started her work in health and safety; her initial projects were helping to author NRCA's first Safety Manual and Toolbox Talks. As part of the education department, Amy has helped with the startup of the Future Executives Institute, shaping and teaching For Foremen Only, and implementing the growing ProForeman certificate program.

Amy's responsibilities include working with the education department and NRCA University committees to ensure all NRCA University offerings are well-developed, thorough and meet member needs.


Richard Trewyn
NRCA's director of risk education and training

Rich joined NRCA in 2015. Prior to joining NRCA, he was the national safety director for TECTA, and he started his career at FJA Christiansen Roofing Companies in Milwaukee in 1996. With a degree in occupational safety and health from the University of Wisconsin—Whitewater and his numerous certificates and certifications within the safety field, he brings a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise to NRCA. He is an authorized trainer for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) 10- and 30-hour construction safety classes and an authorized Certified Roofing Torch Applicator (CERTA) trainer of torch-applied system classes. He also teaches NRCA's fall-protection and CERTA train-the-trainer classes.


Bill Steinmetz
Consultant

Bill is a third-generation roofing contractor who has installed all major roof system types. He has been active in the roofing industry since 1981. He is an instructor for and consultant to NRCA and is involved with training programs held in China and India. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and has served as loss control manager for Midland Engineering, South Bend, Ind. (1981-1996), vice chairman of NRCA (1993-1995) and authorized Occupational Safety and Health Administration trainer (1996-present). He completed the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Trades Apprenticeship Program in 1985.


Jim Brauner
President, Brauner Safety Services Inc.

Jim is president and owner of Brauner Safety Services Inc. He started his safety consulting company after many years in training, sales, service and installation of commercial roofing equipment. He began working in the roofing equipment business in 1979 for his brother, Rick Brauner, at Brauner Equipment Co. He became vice president and managed the Chesapeake, Va., branch and Philadelphia locations. After record snowfall in 1996, he decided it was time to live in Florida. He developed Roofing Equipment of Florida with locations in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale. He provided roofing equipment sales, service and training.

Jim maintains membership in and continues to support the Central Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Association; Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association; Midwest Roofing Contractors Association; NRCA; and Roofing Contractors Association of South Florida. He was CFRSA's president in 2007 and served on FRSA's board of directors. He received the distinguished FRSA Bob Campanella Award in 2014. He offers CERTA training; Occupational Safety and Health Administration site inspections; fall-protection, ladder safety, forklift and Lull certification training; and toolbox talks.

Participants must be proficient in the use of a roofing torch, be able to speak and read English, and have some experience training others.

NRCA understands circumstances may arise that require registration cancellation. However, last-minute cancelations or no-shows are detrimental to NRCA’s intentionally small courses.

  • If you cancel up to 10 business days before an event, your registration fee will be refunded.
  • If your cancellation is received 10 business days or less before an event, you may send another person in your place or receive a credit for an NRCA University program within the next 12 months.
  • Registrants who do not cancel before the event or do not attend are liable for the entire registration fee.

All cancellations must be in writing.

No-shows or cancellations made less than 48 hours before a class will not receive a refund or credit. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.

NRCA reserves the right to cancel an event. If such a cancellation occurs, registrants will be notified and will receive a full refund.
