The construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates among all workers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 6,000 construction workers died by suicide in 2022 compared with about 1,000 workers who died from a work-related injury.

Justin Azbill, director of national environmental health and safety for Milwaukee Tool, joins NRCA to share his story about the day he almost died by suicide. Since that day, Azbill has dedicated his time to telling his story across the U.S. and sharing proactive steps to help others while working to stem the epidemic of deaths from suicide in the construction industry.

Justin Azbill
Director of national environmental health and safety for Milwaukee Tool

Justin Azbill has been in the safety profession since the mid-1990s following his service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was appointed director of national environmental health and safety at Milwaukee Tool in July 2021 and is responsible for directing the design, implementation and maintenance of environmental, safety and health programs. He has been an advocate for the safety and well-being of trade professionals for nearly 30 years while serving in leadership roles for several large national firms.

Azbill currently is a sitting member of the board of trustees for the Construction Industry Alliance of Suicide Prevention as a director at large. He is recognized for sharing his experience focusing on leadership burnout and the importance of a proactive approach for mental wellness.
